ACA Enrollees feel subsidy loss: “Without it, I wouldn’t have coverage”

People across the country are seeing higher health insurance costs at the start of the new year. This comes after Congressional Republicans did not extend the Affordable Care Act’s enhanced premium tax credits when they expired at the end of 2025.
Lori Hunt is one of the many ACA enrollees who have had to make difficult decisions due to increased costs. As a cancer survivor who lost her job in December 2024, Hunt said she relies on enhanced premium tax credits for required MRIs, screenings, and daily medication.
Hunt said she is trying to maintain her coverage for as long as possible, but the uncertainty is stressful. The decision to extent enhanced tax credits for Americans like Hunt now rests with the Senate, which is expected to vote on a proposed three-year extension.
